Pada suatu sore di tengah bulan puasa, terdengar bunyi TUNG! nyaring dari laptop saya. Entah kerasukan apa setiba-tiba saya langsung mengiyakan untuk menulis secarik liner notes untuk rilisan kali dari ini, sebuah band dari Boston, USA yang bernama Remainder.
Kebetulan, saya juga ingin sedikit curhat tentang aliran musik yang diusung oleh Remainder ini, yaitu: screamo.
Saya pertama kali berkenalan dengan genre ini sekitar tahun 2009, berawal dari debat berkepanjangan di forum kaskus mengenai sebuah situs bernama emo-united.com yang menggambarkan subgenre emo sebagai sekedar fesyen dan tendensi masokistis dari mereka yang mengaku sebagai "emokids" (saat ini situs emo-united.com yang dimaksud sudah entah kemana). Perdebatan tersebut menggiring saya kepada situs-situs pencerahan macam fourfa.com yang menjelaskan secara cukup runut sejarah "emo" dari era summer revolution sampai dengan skena midwest emo yang berjasa mengantar anak yang terlupakan dari hardcore punk ini menuju telinga khalayak sampai akhirnya terkomodifikasi dan terdistorsi menjadi remeh temeh macam fesyen dan ritual menyilet tangan.
Bagi saya, Remainder bagaikan sekumpulan individu yang mencoba memotret sebagian fase dari perjalanan subgenre ini. Fase yang coba mereka potret adalah screamo, yakni di mana hardcore punk menjadi sangat abstrak. Feedback, distorsi, dan raungan bertebaran di mana-mana. Chaotic! Tapi tidak, Remainder tidak se-alien itu. Remainder memotret screamo dengan Saetia sebagai objek utamanya (setidaknya begitu yang saya lihat). Mereka memperpadukan emosi mentah screamo dengan melankolia yang melodis, membuat nya lebih dinamis dan kontemplatif.
Potret adalah analogi yang setidaknya menurut saya cocok untuk menggambarkan rilisan Anthology ini. Selain menggambarkan relik yang sudah lampau, rilisan ini juga merekam perjalanan dari Remainder mulai dari ketika mereka masih mengusung nama C'est La Guerre, EP mereka yang mendadak berubah terlampau kelam, sampai dengan full-length mereka yang bertajuk Set Aside Your Fears. Ah, sudahlah saya tidak ingin membuat anda membaca lebih lama lagi. Mari kita arungi saja potret perjalanan mereka. Teriaklah yang lantang jikalau ingin, bernyanyilah bersama mereka, karena itulah esensi dari aliran ini. Skramz!(deadblackflag)
In an evening at the middle of my fasting, a "beep" comes from my speaker. I didnt even notice what happen at the time that I just recieve and confirm a request for a liner notes writing for this release, a boston based band named Remainder. Plus, this is an exact time for me for discussing the music genre which Remainder played, Screamo.
The first time I knew this such genre is about 2009, where it started with a long discussion in Kaskus forum about a site named emo-united.com which describes emo subgenre is just a fashion and masochist tendency from those stated themself as a "emokids" (and now the site is out of nowhere). The discussion was tucked me into a curiousity where I found some guidence, sites ike fourfa.com which explains in details and sequence about "emo" history from summer revolution era into midwest scene which respectively brought these forgotten kids of hardcore punk into a wider crowd and finally commodified and distorted into a chessy fashion stuff and a rite of scratching hand.
To me, Remainder is a collective who are trying to capture some phase of this subgenre. The phase is screamo, its where hardcore punk were shaped to be so much abstract. Feedback, distortion, and roar were spread along the song structures. It's Chaotic! But Remainder not that worst. Remainder put up screamo with Saetia as its main object (at least thats what I hear so far). They combine the raw emotion of screamo with the melodious melancholia which blend into a more dynamic and contemplative atmosphere.
Potrait is an analogy which, at least, fits to describe about this anthology. Beside a past traces, this release also captures their jurney since they were still in a name C'est La Guerre, their EP which is so much darker, to the full-length named Set Aside Your Fears. Oh come on, I actually dont wanna to put your eyes longer on this writing. So just let your ear onto their journey. Scream if you are to, sing with them, cause that is the essence of this genre.
